Performance of Real-time Computing and Real-time Network Communication ...
Open Source licensed software has a number of important advantages that qualifies it particularly for being used in industrial systems. Among them is the fact that Open Source software cannot be discontinued in the same way as selling proprietary software can be ceased by a vendor. The latter may make it impossible to continue production and maintenance of a system – thus, effectively reducing its otherwise not yet limited product life time. This explains, for example, the unparalleled success with which Linux is taking over the market of industrial operating systems. However, Open Source software may require, more than proprietary software, that the user takes care of the quality including maintenance measures in case there is a software problem. On the other hand, such maintenance must not necessarily be done individually, but can be done in a community. OSADL is such a community and has created a test center dubbed OSADL QA Farm to assess the quality in terms of stability and performance of Linux based embedded systems and to provide maintenance support. This presentation takes a closer look into the guts of the OSADL QA Farm and provides selected examples how quality assessment and software maintenance work.
