Performance Impact of Security for Real-time Fieldbus Traffic in a TSN Network
Security is an increasing concern in industrial systems. From the many aspects of security this paper focuses on the real-time performance impact of integrity protection and confidentiality at the fieldbus level real-time cyclic IO traffic. This traffic has unique hard real-time requirements that cannot be directly met by using well established IP networking solutions like TLS, DTLS or MACSec. In this work, we quantify the additional latency introduced by adding integrity protection and confidentiality to cyclic IO frames using principles outlined by Profinet over TSN on commercially available embedded industrial system-on-chip (SoC). Our results show the additional latency and processing load intruduced by adding security to cyclic IO packets. Profinet over TSN is used as an example but the results apply for other real-time datagram protocols such as OPC UA PubSub over raw Ethernet.
