Optimizing Threat Modelling to Create Robust IoT Security Solutions
The expected growth of IoT devices will be fueled by a myriad of use cases, including surveillance cameras, smart meters, smart speakers and asset trackers. These use cases each have power, performance and area (PPA) constraints and more importantly, the need for robust security. Threat Modelling and Security Analysis is a systematic approach, which helps to architect security requirements, optimized for a specific use case. These requirements needs to be mapped to a design that operates within the desired PPA constraints. This presentation will walk the audience through a systematic approach to architecture and designing for security using the standard STRIDE threat model applied to an example IoT device use case like Smart Speaker. This will include IoT device use case analysis, adversary model, threat entry points, critical assets to be protected, countermeasures against attacks and finally distilling the mitigation's to a set of security objectives and requirements. The presentation will walk you through this approach and will also shows how Arm's Platform Security Architecture can facilitate it as well. This presentation is designed for all stakeholders involved with the design, build, specification and purchase of IoT devices, with a need for security robustness. The audience will understand what Threat Modelling and Security Analysis is including: use case requirements, identifying assets, adversary models, threat scenarios and defining the mitigation strategy.
