Motor Condition Monitoring for Predictive Maintenance in "Industrie 4.0"
In today's factories there are lots of motors that are critical for the production and a functional failure of this critical equipment might cause a complete line-stop. There are usually extensive preventive maintenance plans to avoid this. These plans are based on lifetime statistic not on the actual condition of the equipment. Understanding the actual condition can reduce the maintenance cost but also the risk of an unexpected breakdown. Using this knowledge to schedule repair and replacement is also called predictive maintenance - a key component of 'Industrie 4.0' and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Vibration sensing is one method to observe the condition and it has the advantage that it is a very early indicator of a potential failure. Today vibration analysis is often an off-line task that is manually executed according to the preventive maintenance plan. By continuously monitoring the condition it is possible to increase the time between the prediction and the actual failure and thus maximizes the maintenance window giving flexibility in scheduling the repair. This presentation will detail the motivation of using continuous monitoring for motors, it will present how such a sensing platform could look like, why it makes sense to do some processing in the sensor (on the edge) itself, and how this application ties into the IIoT and enables the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict failures early.
