Model based approach for wireless network design and implementation Author: Chung Wo Co-Author: Marco Roggero Development of wireless networks is a complex and challenging task requiring engineers to verify and optimize their baseband signal processing algorithms, system architectures and control protocols on SDR/FPGA prototypes. Furthermore, different implementations of key communication systems functionalities and settings for channel models and network layers need to be tested as early as possible in the development process in order to reduce impact of detected errors in the design flow. In this article we describe a practical Simulink model based design for multi-node wireless networks that greatly facilitate analysis and implementation. We show first how to model and simulate a packet data radio network with three wireless transceivers communicating over fading channels. Each radio node consists of a QPSK physical (PHY) layer and a data link (DL) layer composed by two sublayers: medium access control (MAC) layer and logical link control (LLC) layer. The MAC layer models two selectable MAC functions: ALOHA-based and 802.11-CSMA/CA. Finally the article show how to easily implement the model on SDR FPGA boards using efficient technologies to convert systems from floating to fixed point and for automatic HDL code generation. The proposed example can also be used as a template to design much more complicated multi-node wireless networks, like WLAN, V2X, LTE, and 5G.
