IP Authoring for Re-Usability in SoC-based Designs and Derivative Products
IP assets within companies are often under-utilized due to a variety of impediments. The most common are: discoverability, suitability, quality-assessment, asset acquisition, and support. Larger companies often have access to third-party IP; but the terms-of-use, licensing and internal contacts for those IPs may be unclear (leading to redundant and/or delayed acquisition). Some designers may have never designed for reusability and the requirements for publishing for other design teams are not well understood. This often leads to (de-facto) sharing practices such copying assets from network file systems. Loss of design expertise, the exact origin of IP, and its suitability for a given technology or purpose is (therefore) lost. Traceability for functional safety adherence is fundamentally compromised. In order for IP reuse to be fully leveraged within an enterprise, a culture of sharing and re-use needs to be fostered and supported by management, engineering practices and software tools.
