Integrating Capacitive Touch Technology Into Electronic Access Control Products
Capacitive touch brings improved mechanical reliability, a high quality look and feel, and enhanced security via scrambled key locations to electronic access control systems. Historically, these benefits are often counteracted by additional system cost, higher average power consumption, and touch detection reliability issues in outdoor environments when the touch panel is exposed to moisture. Microcontrollers equipped with capacitive touch sensing technology have key features designed to address these challenges. This paper discusses system design techniques for reducing the average current draw of a 12-button capacitive touch keypad into the single digit microamperes, as well as system integration techniques to reduce system cost and improve moisture tolerance.
