Impacts of Increased Software Diversity on Embedded Systems
Complex embedded system software assembly is undergoing dramatic change. Applications are increasingly being delivered integrated and packaged with their own custom OS instance. This trend started with IT systems leveraging virtual machines and containers and has now come to the embedded system arena. With the huge amount of software landing in discrete multicore embedded systems having diverse core values and needs, one OS instance is no longer able to provide an optimal operating environment for the breadth of applications that must be run. Applications may be developed for a particular OS, or continually evolving or frozen such as with open-source and certified systems respectively, or may simply come from multiple sources and thus need to be partitioned for licensing or release cadence reasons. We will explore new heterogeneous distributed system architectures targeting multicore SoC embedded systems and what that means when creating, capturing embedded software value.
