How to Bring the Internet of Things Online
The data that we need to build a smarter world will come from the billions of devices in homes, factories, oil wells, hospitals, cars, and thousands of other places. Most of the nodes for data collection will be small, microcontroller-based devices €“ such as sensor networks €“ that can be connected directly to the cloud or indirectly via larger processing units that can filter data or perform machine learning at the edge. Companies and organizations connecting these devices to the Internet of Things face challenges created by the diversity of IoT use cases and their distinct connectivity and security requirements. The resulting multitude of unique hardware designs has implications for device software; it€™s challenging to develop simple, universal software because it has to be continuously ported to the seemingly infinite number of combinations of hardware components and technology. In this keynote, creator of the MIT-licensed FreeRTOS operating system Richard Barry examines how to manage the complexity surrounding security and connectivity when connecting small edge devices to the Internet of Things (IoT).
