High Speed Communication: Everything Serial
In the last two decades serial transceiver technology has advanced significantly towards an impressive single transceiver bit rate of over 50Gbit/second. Where FPGA devices and processors have been evolving to processes more and more data at an ever increasing rate, the communication of data was not keeping the same pace. This is rather important when the development of cloud based servers are observed: unimaginable amounts of processors working on loads of data. Much of the energy is spent on communication: the local memory, the storage memory, the processors in a cluster, the internet backbone or just the local network. Serialization is an answer to manage the massive amount of data exchanged in relation to big cables, wiring and power consumption. Many silicon devices start to support serialized high-speed connectivity. FPGA devices are the natural choice when opting for serialized data communication and processing. With the current generation FPGA devices an interesting balance is created between processing of data as well as the communication of it. This presentation will address a number of applications realized by Topic Embedded Projects utilizing high-speed transceivers. The technical challenges in terms of physical connectivity, dealing with very high speed PCB design aspects and integrating the transceiver link protocol interface IP in the FPGA. The goal of this presentation is to share experiences and bring up a number pit falls, challenges and achievements.
