Harvesting Energy from RS232 Data Signals to Power a Wired to Wireless Converter
There are still many instruments in use who have an RS232 or a similar serial interface. Adding a wireless connection to such devices often requires the use of a wireless to wired converter powered by an external power supply or a battery. Using a solar cell to avoid the disadvantages of the battery or power supply works only when there is enough light in the environment. A better solution is to harvest energy from the transmission of data and use that energy to quickly start a system that will perform the conversion and transmission, without losing data. This is not easy if the only signals are from the data lines and when they are active only during the communication. In this presentation, we show how energy can be harvested from RS232 data lines, and used to power a wire to Bluetooth Smart converter that will send data to another party. There are important low-power and delay challenges to overcome in order to quickly start the system and sample the communication data. After discussing the requirements of the system, the design and the performance of the a possible solution are presented. The limits are also shown.
