Hardware Security for Embedded Systems
Much attention has been given to the security of embedded systems over recent years as devices are increasingly interconnected. While software vulnerabilities are indeed a common entry point, less attention is given to securing the hardware from physical entry points. Many embedded systems operate in the field and at network edges where they are exposed to such attacks. From simple physical attacks that replace or modify unprotected firmware and software image loads to sophisticated attacks on memory contents or bus transactions, the physical security of the system hardware forms the foundation on which the over-all security solution is built. Securing software without addressing hardware vulnerabilities leaves systems at risk. This paper discusses these vulnerabilities and appropriate techniques to mitigate them. System designers will learn key considerations for establishing a robust hardware root of trust while maintaining flexibility & upgrade-ability of the system. Additional options for securing general-purpose hardware buses and system memory encryption are explored, translating into key selection criteria when choosing CPU solutions for security-sensitive embedded applications.
