Federated Learning and Edge Machine Learning
Edge Machine Learning is crucial to IoT. It's unreasonable that we will deploy 50 bn dumb devices. By enabling the intelligence to run onboard the device, one can see the real-time, granular sensor data instead of blunt averages that are sent to the cloud, which enables instant automation, and less dependency on connectivity. This enables individual learning per device, which is extremely valuable for many features. However, sometimes you want to learn from many. From the entire or sub-set of the installed base. This is why Ekkono introduces Federated Learning as an extension of Edge ML, enabling the correlation of ML models, i.e. compare and combine what you've learnt rather than the data. This saves a lot of bandwidth by just sending the model, while still getting better granularity as the model is trained on all the high-frequency (even kHz) sensor data. This is smart use of computation infrastructure, and enables a lot of new opportunities that will be addressed in this session.
