Fast Path in Embedded Networking
Various modern industries working with networking aim to leverage the power of off-the-shelf hardware with powerful software. Insufficient performances of the generic Linux stack resulted in numerous emerging technologies using kernel bypass methods, which create special pathways for direct communication between userspace applications and latency-critical hardware devices. A different fast path approach to kernel bypass methods is the eXpress Data Path (XDP), a subsystem of the extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) that is integrated into the kernel stack. This paper will give an overview of the shortcomings of the generic Linux networking stack, how XDP mitigated these drawbacks and the benefits of utilizing XDP in specialized workloads of more capable embedded hardware. Additionally, the paper will elaborate on achieved test results from comparing packet drop rates between the generic Linux stack and XDP across numerous commercial boards running two embedded distributions in OpenWrt and Yocto.
