Enhancing Real Time Industrial IoT Communication over TSN: A Technological Study…
Industrial automation equipment maker typically depends on proprietary RTOS or hybrid Linux-RTOS approach with proprietary Ethernet driver to support real-time communication. In recent years, substantial progress has happened in Linux kernel, notably preempt-rt merged into mainline, standardized TSN traffic shaping control interface, in-kernel qdisc and per-packet Tx time setting. Linux community has started to extend the use of eBPF and XDP to build new high performance packet processing. XDP ZC, introduced in Linux 4.18, has impressively achieved very high throughput in 10G & 40G Ethernet. This paper describes how Linux TSN capabilities are used to support OPC UA PubSub over TSN and how very tight cycle time is achievable by extending XDP ZC socket capability with per-packet Tx time setting while IT traffics flow through legacy socket. This approach serves as technology mirror for other real-time communication stack (e.g. PROFINET) to adapt into TSN capability in Linux mainline.
