Embedded Velocity Measurement Using a Sensor Based on a Fly Eye
In this paper we explain how an auto-velocity detection sensor can be implemented on an embedded camera. In the course of a project developing navigational solutions for autonomous robots an auto-velocity detector was developed. The sensor was originally modeled on a fly eye, which we briefly describe, but it became obvious that the known implementation models were insufficient for use on a standard camera. This is because the Elementary Motion Detector (EMD) upon which technical implementations of the fly eye are based works fine at high sampling speeds but loses linearity at speeds associated with commercial off the shelf cameras (~60fps-30fps.) We present supporting measurements. A new token tracking system was thus developed and implemented on a standard camera. We describe the algorithm, including measurement data, before we describe the real-time characteristics of the algorithm, also with measurement data and how this feature can be implemented/integrated on a standard embedded camera and used in an industrial environment.
