Distance Estimation Using Narrow-band Wireless Time of Flight
Low-power, low-cost accurate localization and ranging applications using narrow-band wireless (NBW) techniques provides key enablement for a diverse set of applications in the vastly growing Internet of Things (IoT) segment. Some of the key applications of wireless ranging include home and automotive access systems, indoor ranging, asset tracking, proximity sensing, distance estimation, gaming, security perimeter enforcement, and relay attack prevention to name a few. Unlike ultra-wideband (UWB) alternates, narrow-band wireless systems consume much lower power for each transmission and reception, which makes them suitable for battery powered applications. Furthermore, narrow-band radios possess wireless range that is an order of magnitude higher than UWB systems, allowing them to meet the requirements for several line-of-sight(LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) application conditions. A higher accuracy of distance estimation is achieved in NBW using signal processing and data-fusion techniques that extend beyond standardized wireless protocols.
