DECT: Wireless for Professional Requirements
DECT is one of ETSI€™s first and most successful technologies. As the technology evolves to meet the requirements of the 5G application landscape, this paper will show how DECT has re-defined itself and continues to attract new applications, innovators and brand names with a high professional demand for wireless in their portfolios Did you know that DECT figures heavily in pretty much every walk of life? What will surprise many however, is the fact that the applications using DECT have one thing in common: They have an overriding need to be utterly reliable. They carry the demands of professional applications like Emergency services, Flight Control centres, Power Plants, Airport ground staff, Hospitals, Campuses and the whole area of Programme Making and Special Events (PMSE). In the home, operators are also making use of the DECT radio found in almost every European home gateway for DECT based voice and low powered Smart Home services. The current requirements of many of these applications are in line with the demands of 5G. This ties in nicely with how DECT and ULE are evolving to become a 5G technology for the 5G key use case scenarios URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency communications) and mMTC (massive Machine type communications). Becoming a 5G approved technology will imply significantly enhancing the specification, allowing DECT to go well beyond its current parameters, while leveraging the installed base by being backward compatible. Voice in different forms, as well as smart home and building will remain key markets. By lowering latency, improving range, bandwidth, and reliability DECT for 5G will address a range of new industry verticals that require its unique offering for mission critical applications. This application diversification will also be supported by its openD API for wireless application development based on DECT ad ULE. This paper will outline how DECT already addresses many mission critical markets and how it will underscore this uniqueness to become a 5G technology that will complement other 5G technologies to bring best quality wireless for demanding environments.
