DECT-5G: Enhancing the DECT and ULE Standards to Embrace the Requirements of 5G (IMT-2020)
DECT-5G is the specification describing the next generation of DECT addressing the requirements of IMT-2020 (the ITU-R name for 5G). With this submission, we would like to outline the dynamic behind 5G and the motivation for upgrading the technology from 3G (IMT-2000) to 5G (IMT-2020). Becoming a 5G approved technology will allow DECT to go well beyond its current parameters, while leveraging the installed base, being backward compatible. Voice and smart home and building will remain key markets. Other target 5G use cases defined within the scope of IMT-2020 are within URLLC and MMTC. By lowering latency, improving range, bandwidth, and reliability, DECT-5G will address a range of new industry verticals with mission critical requirements.Several member contributions that outline the types of applications driving the new standard are included. This should serve to make DECT-5G and its potential use case more tangible. 5G also entails addressing a wide range of vertical markets. To support this, DECT Forum has also created openD, an open source API that allows developers(the openD community) to create state of the art wireless applications based on the strengths of DECT and ULE in one package. Building on a seamless interface to Raspberry PI and STM Nucleo, openD will provide developers with reference designs that give a head start in any application design. The session includes a hands on tutorial on working with openD and becoming part of the community.
