Databases at the Edge – ObjectBox for Devices and Gateways
Embedded and IoT devices are usually part of a bigger network. In times of edge computing, the focus shifts away from the cloud and makes devices on the edge more autonomous. A direct consequence of operating autonomously is that devices and/or gateways must manage local data. This is where embedded databases like SQLite or ObjectBox come into play. The low memory footprint allows them to run on constrained devices. In this scenario, ObjectBox has a couple of unique characteristics. For one, its data representation is based on objects that can be sent over the network without any marshaling or parsing. Further, it handles data synchronization: data is distributed among devices, gateways and the cloud without additional implementation effort. Optional components like MQTT data ingestion ports simplify communication with a wide variety of IoT devices. This talk will also present benchmarks of databases typically used at the edge. The results indicate that the database choice has a huge performance impact: depending on use cases, the differences can be an order of a magnitude. RAM and storage consumption will also be reviewed to give the audience a complete picture.
