CAN, LIN, RS232/485 Over DC Powerline – Challenges and Semiconductor Solutions
Transferring reliably CAN, LIN, RS232/485 protocols over powerline requires significant sophistication due to the power lines unpredictable communication channel response and noise. The power lines as communication channel become relevant in many industries where wires are of concern due to weight, cost, space and reliability. This presentation describe semiconductor solutions for CAN, LIN, RS232/485 protocols at data rates up to 1.4Mbit/s. The new DC-LIN ISO 17987-8 standard address the LIN over DC powerline communication. A semiconductor implementation will be presented. Arbitration over powerline is a great challenge due to the power line noises. An innovative solution implemented in a CAN over powerline device that meets automotive and aerospace industries requirements will be described. Although several communication techniques mitigate with these difficulties, the solutions are costly in terms of silicon size. The new devices mitigate with the cost of the wires it replaces.
