Camera Standards for Embedded Vision Systems Vortragssprache Englisch

Embedded systems still require a lot of implementation effort especially when it comes to using vision front ends. In contrast PC based systems using machine vision cameras work more or less in a plug-and-play manner. This is mainly due to 10 years intense standardization work on camera interfaces. As a result PC based vision systems can be created with reasonable effort even for small quantities while today’s embedded vision systems cannot. This should be changed. Standardization yields two effects: it lowers cost for vendors and customers since pre-defined technology can be used; and it grows the market since vendors agreeing to a standard signal to customers that it is safe to invest in a certain technology. The latter effect is the key reason for vendors to come together in standardization since the growth of the market normally over-compensates the effect that standardization allows replacing products from different vendors and thus creates cost pressure for vendors. This follows the saying “instead of fighting for a share of a small cake better focus on enlarging the cake itself”. The presentation gives an overview on the standards ecosystem of the PC based camera world which is based on a division of labor between a commonly used software interface standard named GenICam and a set of so-called transport layer standards such as GigE Vision, USB Vision, Camera Link, and CoaXPress. GenICam defines a programming interface for cameras as well as an extensible list of standardized features which allows exchanging cameras from different vendors in a plug-and-play manner. The transport layer standards deal with the details of accessing camera registers and shifting video data blobs to the host while being agnostic of the actual meaning of the data transferred. This scheme can also be used with embedded vision systems thus inheriting a lot of existing and well proven technology. In addition customers can share the same interfaces between PC based and embedded systems which eases the transition towards embedded a lot. The presentation shows how existing camera standards can be used in the embedded world and what the benefits are for customers and vendors. The conclusion is that by using these standards the industry can do a large step towards lowering cost for the creation of embedded vision systems.
