Breaking Security: Power Analysis & Fault Injection Attacks
Embedded security underpins many products being developed today - be it content distribution on a SoC used in a set-top box, a proprietary algorithm stored in an automotive ECU, or the cryptographic storage of private information in a hardware wallet. This presentation looks at several common devices to understand where your security assumptions might be wrong. In particular it demonstrates how power analysis can break symmetric and asymmetric encryption, how fault injection can bypass security fuse bits, and how signature verification steps can be skipped entirely. This is not just an academic threat: the types of attacks detailed in this presentation have been used on real products including smart light bulbs, gaming consoles, and automotive computers. The use of open-source tools in this presentation help an embedded engineer better understand these threats, and start to protect their systems against the next generation of attacks on embedded systems.
