AES Cryptosystem Key Extraction on Standard ÂµC and Countermeasures
In these modern times, connected devices must communicate over potential insecure channels. Hackers and reverse engineers can easily discover and extract AES key material by using low budget hard- and software tools. Embedded hardware designers must cope with the fact that even mostly unskilled groups of attackers can reveal keys at costs compared to a dinner meal. Upmost, if one is using a symmetric cryptosystem and the secret keys are shared among all devices, it is obvious that the stronghold of data privacy collapses in every single device if only one fails. This workshop is intended to teach the fundamentals of the AES cryptosystem and how the side-channel-attack differential power analysis (DPA) works. During the second part of the workshop, the presenter will conduct a live demonstration of how the AES key can be extracted out of a standard ÂµC running AES in a ÂµC€™s hardware engine. Finally, countermeasures using secure co-processors against common attacks will be presented.
