A Scalable and Effective Design Approach in Enabling TSN for RTOS: A Case in Enabling TSN on Zephyr RTOS for Intel
Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) Ethernet technology much sought after by industrial automation equipment maker who heavily depends on real-time communication with bounded low latency. To achieve this on today RTOS, it requires a systematic approach that combined both TSN capable hardware and software innovation which offers network sockets for mixed-criticality traffics in an OT/IT network and data path innovation such as Tx & Rx ring passing between user-space and Ethernet controller DMA engine without data-copy e.g. UDP Zero Copy methodology in FreeRTOS. This paper uses Zephyr, a Linux Foundation open-source RTOS project, as technology case study to explain networking stack Tx & Rx frame buffer zero-copying & ring management and how TSN traffic shaper (802.1Qbv & 802.1Qbu) configuration could be populated over LLDP and YANG/netconf client. All above are key components to ensure scalable TSN network configuration deployment and end-to-end communication with bounded low cycle time.
