A Hierarchical State Machine (HFSM) Realization with Polymorhism and Inheritance
Finite State Machines (FSM) are quite useful in reactive systems when there are many inherent states. However, number of states and code size increases exponentially with these machines (Mealy and Moore) and hierarchical form of state machines is needed to reduce complexity. Our model is an extended version of state pattern in Gang of Four for hierarchical (nested) states with entry() and exit() actions. We propose a simple yet powerful Hierarchical Finite State Machine (HFSM) which is scalable, efficient and easy to debug. We exploit the polymorphism and inheritance using C++03. Although we used proposed implementation on a real time embedded project, it is not restricted to embedded world, can be used on any platform.
