A Clean Slate Approach to Embedded Linux Security: RISC-V Enclaves
Linux enclaves have historically suffered from an excess of complexity. In RISC-V the necessary security primitives are built into the hardware. What is missing is a simple and robust open standard API that system architects and application developers can use without requiring in-depth security knowledge. In this presentation, Cesare Garlati - Founder of Hex Five Security and long time member of the RISC-V Foundation €“ and Dr. Sandro Pinto of the University of Minho will introduce the concept of a multi zone enclave for Linux and its underlying zero-trust computing model. Garlati and Pinto will present the implementation of the free and open multi zone API as a proposed standard for adoption in the RISC-V community and beyond. The multi zone API is like Docker at the chip level: it presents a minimalist API structure suitable for a thin, formally verifiable micro kernel, inter-zone secure communications, interrupt mapping, and trap & emulation for secure execution of micro-services.
