Dr. Nathan Smith

Sharp Laboratories of Europe

Dr. Nathan J. Smith obtained his PhD in 2001 from the University of Exeter, UK, where he studied the switching dynamics of liquid crystals. Since 2001, Dr Smith has worked at Sharp Laboratories of Europe (SLE), Oxford, UK, the European research and development centre of Sharp Corporation. During his time at SLE, Dr Smith has filed over 50 patents on wide variety of liquid crystal and display related technologies including: autostereoscopic 3D displays, LC parallax optics, photoalignment of LCs, switchable privacy displays, LC lenses, fast switching LCs, transflective LCDs, reflective LCDs and bi-stable LCDs. Recently, Dr Smith has invented PSV technology for FFS LCDs that enables high display image quality in both dark and bright environments.
